The First Example, is the innocent one who wanders off. He may have been enticed by a butterfly; or an especially tasty looking patch of grass. He may have heard a humming, buzzing sound he just had to investigate.
In any case this lamb was enticed, seduced away from the flock and safety. He had every intention of doing right. He even loves the shepherd. He simply feels the path is plain vanilla, boring, and he just wants to have fun.
This is the example of the Christian who has not developed his experience into a relationship with Jesus. Its still a 'religious' experience. He wants to go to church and do all the right things. He is helpful, courteous, very friendly to others but is excited by getting off the path and maintaining independence.
He doesn't even start for home until the last minute when he sees the storm clouds coming over the horizon. He tells himself he has lots of time for one more daisy.
You may find yourself in this same situation. All "butterflies" and "daisies" [whatever those things represent to you] are only temporal and each one will lead you further and further from the pathway until you are engulfed in darkness and can not find your way home.
In the presence of the Lord (our good Shepherd) there is fullness of joy. Psalms 16:11 Jesus came to give you a life that is abundant and overflowing. Listen to His voice and stay close behind Him; He is leading you to eternal life and joy. John 10:4
This is another problem we often find in our lives that will keep us from being able to access the Throne of God. If you feel you have wandered away now is the time to start calling out for forgiveness and help. The Good Shepherd who left the 99 and went out into the night to look for the one lost lamb will not leave you either but is even now listening for your cries for help. He will rescue you immediately.
